We love many kinds of media, and especially love the Raku process of firing ceramics. This is a decorative platter glazed with the crusty, crackly crawly glazes that we prefer over some of the neater store-bought glazes.
The Raku process is fast and furious, unpredictable and firey. Glazed pieces are fired up to temperature relatively quickly, pulled out of the kiln while red hot, and then smothered in combustible materials such as pine straw and sawdust. It is messy, hot, and you never know what you’re going to get! The temperature changes can be hard on the pieces and some don’t make it without breaking. The glazes react differently with the various environmental changes, ensuring no two pieces can ever be the same.
